Dr Sketchy’s Anti Art School: El Bizarro Showcase! | Connections Nightclub | Feb 14 | ★ ★ ★ ★

Dr. Sketchy’s Anti Art School was first imagined in a small dive bar in Manhattan. The goal was to give artists the opportunity to use live models that are a little more…ostentatious.

Normally coming from burlesque or sideshow backgrounds, these models generally have a lot more detail to their appearance. Also, they can usually perform some cool tricks while on stage.

The models appearing on the night I went were Jade and Todd, both of whom are very talented Perth freak show performers. Currently appearing in El Bizarro, I have seen them perform a few times in the past and find them both riveting and nauseating all at once. It’s great!

Both dressed in animal masks and bloody clothes, they entered the stage. The theme here was obviously ‘Rob Zombie horror movie’. There were a few gasps and a lot of wide eyes but as soon as they started pulling poses all I heard was pencils on paper.

The second part of the night involved a small play-piercing demonstration. Todd stood on-stage and pierced his cheeks with a skewer while Jade walked around and asked audience members to staple rosebuds to her chest. It was oddly artistic. She then removed her gloves and revealed that she had hooks pierced through her forearms (plot twist!) which she used to swing stage decorations from.

Once they got it all out of their system, they took their poses again and we had some time to sketch them with the play-piercings in, which added an interesting dynamic to the art.

Not being an artist myself, I was worried that I wouldn’t enjoy the night; this is just not true. I had an absolute blast.

For a fun night out with friends, You can’t beat Dr. Sketchy’s Anti Art School.
