Brash and Sassy

Written by Brett Dias
Thursday, 05 June 2008

There’s something about Brash and Sassy that reminds me of lightening in a jar. The girls have a similar electric presence and you’re never quite sure what you’ll get from the trio but you’re guaranteed to be a little shocked. Ava Loverock, Ho Sek Fun (a.k.a. Miriam) and Gennaia Febbraia make up Brash and Sassy, a trio of electro pop shoulder-padded singers who are whipping Perth into a frenzy. (more…)

Tomas Ford: The Anti-Headliner

Written by Brett Dias
Thursday, 03 April 2008

Tomas Ford wants to get a rise out of you, but not in the way you might think. Musician, actor, comedian and all-round performer, the boy from Rockingham is making waves.

You’re infamous for having a large stage presence. How do you get the energy?

I drink a lot of caffeinated products and that helps! I feed off the energy of the crowd. I try to get a reaction out of people, and if you can do that, it’s such a rush. You get into this headspace where you’re running around in this anarchic mode where you feel like anything could happen. I like getting a rise out of people because we live in such an apathetic town! I grew up in Rockingham which is so conservative. (more…)

The Buzz

Is it really March? Yes, you fool, it is - 2008 stops for nobody! Summer is winding down to a humid close, but the world is still turning and our little city is still buzzing, so check it all out! Last month we had the WAMI awards and now the Regional WAMi Tour makes its way through Northam, Merredin, Narrogin and Quindanning from March 27-30. If you’re in the neighbourhood, give it a go.

Back in Perth, there’s plenty of fun to be had. RTRFM honours International Women’s Day with some ladies rock, featuring the vivacious Sex Panther, at Drastic on Plastic’s March 8 at Mojo’s. Later in the month, RTRFM turns it up for Full Frequency (March 20) at Club Capital. (more…)

Future Music Festival: Shapeshifters

Another of the big guns at the Future Music Festival… read on and get to know THE SHAPESHIFTERS before they touch down in Perth.

Why the album title ‘Do not Disturb’? Because we’ve spent so much time in hotels!

Favourite place to perform? Probably Croatia. Many of the Eastern European countries at the moment are the best places to play because of the energy and the clubs are amazingly well presented. (more…)

Brett’s Take - Bad Fish & Good Relationships

There’s a place that lays beyond the dating world – it’s the world of relationships. It should come as no surprise that this world comes with a different set of rules, guidelines, pros and, of course, cons. For the serial dater it can be a case of lost in translation – the world becomes a different place, and if you’re lucky enough you can become a different person. (more…)

SceneOUT - January

Happy New Year!

I’ve been reading the horoscopes, and from all accounts, 2008 is a year to party, so go easy at work and make sure you have some energy left for the important things – good friends, good people and good times!

Summer is your time to shine. If you don’t have a tan, fake it (is orange the new black?) and get yourself out there.

If you haven’t already, get yourself to the Court and sample the cuisine from the new kitchen. It’s definitely date night food in the restaurant - the potato gnocchi is to die for and rumour has it they poached the very nice head waiter from the very posh Jackson’s just up (Beaufort) street in Mount Lawley. Of course the pizza and tapas out in the beer garden isn’t half bad either. (more…)

SceneOUT December

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. I know this because there are more gays than usual shopping at Ikea.

Christmas, Hanukkah and a bit of Eid al-Adha – truly is the season to be jolly. As the festive season rolls on that glowing ember we call the sun burns brighter than ever during the day and balmy summer nights herald the start of the Holidays – there’s nothing in the world like a Perth summer. Brett’s Take: Facebook and My Final Frontier

Roughly a lifetime ago I was dating Some Jerk who broke up with me via sms. For a while there he was nicknamed Some Jerk because one, he had grossly misused technology and two, I forgot his name, given that he broke it off with me before I had the chance to learn it.

Like Some Jerk, we seem to use technology for everything these days – we shop online, bank online and chat online, and yes, we even date, make up and break up online. (more…)

SceneOUT: November

Pride month may have been our chance to indulge in gay movies, art, culture, music and food – yes, there is such a thing as gay food (see Beaufort Street for details) – but the fun doesn’t stop when the clock strikes November.

As always, the see and be-seen day in November is Melbourne Cup Day November 6. Forget the racing, this is a day for sipping champagne, wearing hats and frocks and tails. This year’s Cup Day posh picks are Must Winebar, for the drinks; C Restaurant, for the view; and Belmont Race Course, for the spirit. (more…)

Brett’s Take: Ten Things I Know for Sure at 27

Recently it was my birthday and I turned 27. I’m a Libran child and we are known as the most popular of the zodiac, the most charming, beautiful and measured. This is besides the point, but it’s still important to mention that we are up there in star quality… (more…)
