Skiing into Beauty: OUTfashioned with Mark Reid

Written by Mark Reid
Friday, 07 November 2008

As I was recently swishing and rolling down the ski slopes in Queenstown at the annual Gay Ski Week, I found myself alongside a delightful young man, and, as you do, we began to discuss what we did back in our home cities.

As it turns out Nathan Snare just happened to work for a West Australian company that is going global faster than you can say ‘Happy PRIDE’. As we sat down for some lunch, in between learning how to turn our skis so we did not look like complete fools, I wanted to get to know more about him and the company that he is the national sales and operation manager for, BECCA. Some of you who are regular readers of the fashion pages of OUT might remember my wonderful fragrance road trip from last year celebrating some of the new fragrances to hit our shores. Even though the air outside is still crisp it will only be a matter of weeks before we once again see much more sunshine and the return of warmer weather. (more…)

Thursday, 05 June 2008

In Perth’s ever-changing landscape of jewellery design, Alister Yiap has made a distinct impression in the months since he graduated with a BA in jewellery design at the end of last year. After Alister was named one of STYLEAID’s five emerging designers for 2008, I sat down with the young designer whose fresh vision cannot be overlooked. (more…)

Giving a room an overhaul does not require mega bucks and mega time. In fact, it can be as simple as a fresh coat of paint and a few well-selected pieces. Here’s a rundown on strategies for all types of styles:

Feature walls are making a return, that is, if they left us to begin with. When considering a new look for one of your tired old rooms, look at the room’s furniture and select colours that will compliment it. (more…)

From a small idea that started seven years ago to an amazing showcase of young emerging talent, the Hawaiian Emerging Designer component of the STYLEAID parade has evolved into a breathtaking event in its own right.

Each year the event organisers call for expressions of interest from new local designers launching their first or second ranges. This year was no exception with over 25 hopefuls putting forward their latest ranges for consideration. (more…)

Each year around this time the work begins on the images that will form the basis for the advertising, tickets, website and invitations for STYLEAID – and this year is no exception!

Fashionable Interiors

When good friends Greg Baker and Sam Shuhandler went to Asia on holiday, they also went looking for Venetian mirrors. In a shop run by a French manufacturer they stumbled on a treasure trove of amazing furniture. After two hours of serious retail therapy, they found that they had purchased enough to fill a shipping container. So in a round about way (some would say back to front) began the story of the store called Baker and Shuhandler. (more…)

A Rose Among the Thorns

Tuesday, 05 February 2008

Sometimes in my travels I happen to come across a new shop in Perth that really excites me, and let’s face it – being a well worn, long term shopper it takes a lot to excite me!

But excited was exactly what I became when I ventured down Whatley Crescent in Maylands and stumbled across Chapels on Whatley. At present stuck on a street that is in the process of having a much needed face lift, it looks like Whatley Crescent will come into its own in the next couple of years. (more…)

Fashion Road Trip: Passport to San Francisco

Tuesday, 02 October 2007

Taking a trip to San Francisco is like stepping back into the heady days of the late 80’s (for those of you old enough to remember them). Gay flags flutter throughout the streets of Sassy Frisco’s famous gay ghetto the Castro, while the bars and shops overflow with smiling Californians. The streets of the Castro also offer some great shopping alternatives that are no longer limited to the usual leather and denim clone looks that used to be the Castro’s signature look. (more…)

STAND by your man

Tuesday, 02 October 2007

With a plethora of young design talent emerging from our design schools here in Perth and hitting the best boutiques, it can be hard to separate the good design talent from the truly great.

One label that is rapidly proving itself is STAND International. The label, started in Las Vegas in 2003, is the creation of young designer Paul Fields whose vision was to create a street-wear label for men that makes a positive difference in the world. STAND’s popularity as a ‘Stand up for what you believe in’ label has seen many notable US bands, and even some well known celebrities, wearing the label. (more…)
