All I Want For Valentines Day - Is Equality…

Break out the chocolates and rose bouquets – Valentines Day is upon us. Whether you’re planning a romantic dinner, movie-night or just staying in, it’s hard to ignore the flurry of hearts, flowers and appalling poetry coming our way through magazines, billboards and TV. It’s unfortunately one of those holidays that the media jumps on eagerly –bombarding us with endless images of happy, plastic perfect couples celebrating Valentines Day. Sadly, in mainstream media that means almost entirely heterosexual couples. Not for the first time, GLBTI people get left by the wayside and forgotten amid the flurry of rose petals and heart-shaped candies. (more…)

Pride! Getting in on the action!

With Pride’s Annual General Meeting only weeks away it’s time for anyone who’s been thinking about getting involved with Perth’s much loved festival to come forward and nominate themselves for a position on the committee.

Many people I talk to don’t fully understand what it takes to sit on the Pride committee, and that’s mainly because there is no set job description. As with most volunteer work, roles can vary depending on several factors including the amount of time a person has available to them and their skills or available resources. (more…)

Safe Sex Angels: Coming To A Venue Near You

Hey there guys and girls! Safe Sex Angels need you! We are in desperate need of cherubs whose dream it is to be an Angel… volunteer Safe Sex Angel that is.

Safe Sex Angels is the reinvigoration of the old Safe Sex Sluts Project which first hit the streets in 1996. After many years of walking the streets and standing under the odd street light or two, the sluts were retired and the angels took to wing, spreading the safe sex message for the WA AIDS Council. An Open Letter From Pride

Dear Community,

It wouldn’t be the start of a new year if there weren’t rumours circulating about the health and future of Pride. I’d like to take this opportunity to openly discuss Pride’s current position and some of the challenges the committee has been faced with in the past few months, as Pride’s side is often left unheard in these matters. (more…)

New Years Resolutions

New year, new start… yet past battles - those that are lost, those that continue to be fought and those won - will continue to mould the community and it is upon reflection of where we have come from and where we wish to end up that defines the path ahead. So with that in mind, OutinPerth asked prominent community representatives what their New Year’s resolutions and wishes for the future of the GLBTI community involve. (more…)

MY MUMS HOMEMADE IRISH CREAM LIQUEUR

The 1980’s was a time for recipe swapping throughout suburbia. I remember many of mum’s friends & neighbours passing this one like the proverbial Olympic torch. It is lovely as a drink, served on ice (in a large martini glass of course) or as a sauce to accompany your favourite desserts. (more…)

California Casual At Venice Beach: As Laidback As It Gets

The charms and clotheslessness of the Southern Californian lifestyle have beckoned to gaysbians for decades; they still exert a strong pull today. If you’re thinking that gay LA means West Hollywood and nothing else though, think again.

Where to go for the apotheosis of laidback lads and ladies laying back a bit further than their straight friends? Try Venice, where everything Californian worshiped by the locals comes to life along the streets and canals of one of the most eclectic neighbourhoods on the planet. Long a beacon for alternative lifestylists, writers, musicians, and actors, even a few ordinary people have called Venice home for more than a century. It was back in 1905 that visionary conservationist Abbot Kinney created a planned community to incorporate the arts into daily life of the residents of Los Angeles and Santa Monica. With the original Venice as inspiration, Kinney built canals and lined them with Venetian-style public buildings and row after row of classic California bungalows, some of which are now beautifully restored. The classic bungalows now jostle for elbow room with modernist lofts built in the most recent reincarnation of Venice. Mr. Kinney’s legacy lives on in one small area to the south of Venice Boulevard where the few remaining canals are located (the others having been paved over by the municipal government in the 1920s and 30s), though his name is now more familiar to people thanks to the growing popularity of the high-quality shops and restaurants along his eponymous avenue. Venice is the closest spread-out LA comes to having a village in its midst. The chic shops and hipster restaurants are accompanied by Venice’s very own gay bar, Roosterfish, where all are welcome in the heterofriendly establishment, named by LA Weekly as ‘Best Escape From West Hollywood’ in 2009.
