Fashion :: More clothes should come with warning labels!

Written by Scott-Patrick Mitchell
Tuesday, 18 November 2008

More clothes should come with warning labels. No, seriously: they should. And I’m not talking about the washing instruction ‘do not put this white top with colours’ (clearly) or ‘do not iron this plastic print because, well, if you do you clearly have no concept that plastic melts under extreme heat’. No, not those kind of warning labels. (more…)

Above & Beyond the decks….

Written by Scott-Patrick Mitchell
Friday, 07 November 2008

Late last month, Above & Beyond moved up two places from number 6 in the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs listing to number 4. They are set for world domination – literally. They have one of the most comprehensive web presences known to man. They have Facebook, MySpace, Blogger, YouTube, a podcast… you name it, the trio that is Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness and Paavo Siljamäki have their fingers well and truly on the technological pulse. It contributes to a large part of their success. Now, as they prepare to wow Australia at Global Gathering, Tony McG took some time out to chat to OUTinPerth about what it’s like to be in the top 10 of the world’s best DJs. (more…)

Newcastle (M)

Written/directed by Dan Castle

In Newcastle you’re apparently only young forever once. And it’s believable – Newcastle is the kind of rare Australian film which is instantly iconic, a veritable Puberty Blues for Generation Y. But more than that it’s a film which is both visually breathtaking and powerfully emotive in its heartfelt sincerity – a strong combination for a seeming surf flick. (more…)

The Colourul Life of Dame Cindy Pastel

I love her laconic, no bullshit approach to things and her Zen/naive/savant approach to life. Visually she is a wonder and brings much colour and glitter (especially magma orange and hot pink) to a very beige ‘new’ world order. As a showgirl I ache for her incredible passionate and funny performances, the mad face and the inimitable way of moving (part Charlie Chaplin, part Lucille Ball). Her short, sharp wit on the microphone also puts most drag to shame! (more…)

Walking the Windows on Willam

Written by Scott-Patrick Mitchell
Friday, 07 November 2008

More and more art seems to be stepping out of the gallery and finding a new lease of life on the streets. But what happens if you take art and merge it with the retail space? What happens if the exhibition steps out of the gallery and takes place on the high street, leading the viewer from piece to piece, from shop to shop? Well, the result is akin to a new trend in walking exhibitions, and there’s no bigger walking exhibition around town than Windows On William. (more…)

Bob Evans: Blowing off Bull Creek

Written by Scott-Patrick Mitchell
Friday, 07 November 2008

Bob Evans is the darling of earnest Australian acoustic guitar playing men… or rather was. The Bob Evans you used to know, the one that croons his way through Don’t You Think It’s Time, is about to get a slight image overhaul. You see, he’s back from Nashville with a new album – Goodnight, Bull Creek! – which will be released April next year. But if you can’t stand the wait, then fear not: Evans is coming to town to play snippets from the new album, which is packed with treats. It even sees Evans trying his hand at a haunting duet… and some rambunctious bossanova lounge, a style he says that fits him like ‘a flesh tuxedo’. (more…)

How d’you duet? Making a sustainable dance scene in Perth

Written by Scott-Patrick Mitchell
Friday, 07 November 2008

If you have checked out the Silver Artrage Festival program this year, you would have noticed an explosion of contemporary dance taking hold of Perth. And at the crux of this explosion, pirouetting at its epicentre, is Strut, a dance company who is happy to put in the hard yards in order to create a sustainable contemporary dance culture here in little old Perth. Strut’s general manager, Agnes Michelet, had a chat to OUTinPerth (she has the most delightful French accent, don’t you know) about Strut’s showcase Dyuetto. (more…)

Mirror Mirror

This one is a doozy! Throw in all the macabre charm of Snow White, add some red shoes and a whole heap of all things Grimm and you have the devilishly delightful Murdoch University production The Snow White Conspiracy. It’s full of live music, multimedia visual effects and wonderfully uncompromisingly beautiful language courtesy of Howard Barker. It’s only on for an incredibly short time at Murdoch University’s Nexus Theatre from November 5 to November 8 but is definitely worth catching. Like all fairy tales, it will consume you. www.snowwhiteconspiracy.com

Summer of Silk

Written by Scott-Patrick Mitchell
Friday, 07 November 2008

Luxury comes full circle this summer as everyone goes silly with silk. Best buys? Sydney label Pete Versus Toby have gone all out in releasing not only silk t-shirts ($285), but silk singlets ($265) too! They come in the usual Pete Versus Toby flair with shots of the earth at day and night plus imagery of New York City. For those who like it simple, they even have raw silk versions which are considerably cheaper. Race in to Atlas Divine to check out the range, or ring them on 9242 5880 to get them to hold you a top. Alternatively, check out the Pete Versus Toby online store . Elsewhere and Ksubi go crazy with some amazing $500 silk t-shirts, while Cassette Playa go totally limited edition with $750+ silk t-shirts crammed full of Google imagery. And finally, watch out for Material Boy’s Lucid Objects (www.materialboy.com.au) where silk tops come billowy and big while the silk shorts flaunt sophisticated and smart.

The Armada Cometh!

Written by Scott-Patrick Mitchell
Friday, 07 November 2008

Known not only for his dark brooding good looks but his dark brooding good music too, Jeff Martin – former lead man of The Tea Party – is about to make a triumphant return to the forefront of rock music. He brings with him The Armada, his new heavy duty rock outfit that incorporates the deep, dark, swathe of moody blues and fuses it with Middle Eastern influences, not forgetting of course a huge crash of rock and big swell of roll. The result is achingly ballsy and beautiful, just the kind of music we’d expect to hear from Martin. (more…)
