Life OUT Loud :: On Becoming a Girl and Finding the Glass Ceiling
So there I was at Sunset Coasters, sent by She for Whom We Jump to supervise Young Oliver (erstwhile Ad Man of OUTinPerth) and his camera, with a perfectly delightful group of professional gentlemen assembled in the sultry summeresque evening at the Lucky Shag. Marvellous folks really – if you’re interested check out Sunsetcoasters blogspot for details of their Christmas function. Civilised as it was, I was the token girl there. I was feeling a bit out of place, out of sorts and then, while musing on a theme that has had me fascinated for the last few weeks, I hit what was more of an Unlucky Snag. (more…)
‘Functional Cure’ for HIV Reported
In what appears to be a world first, a man has been cured of HIV. The case was first reported at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections that took place in Boston in February of this year. Following a story in The Wall Street Journal on Friday, November 11, amFAR (previously called the American Foundation for AIDS Research) released a report on November 5 from its scientific team outlining details and initial stages of verification of the case. Ben Lee - Festival Escapades
Ben Lee is coming to Perth this month for the Escape in the Park Festival. He told OUTinPerth’s Zoe Carter about crafting performances for festival events…
‘I aspire to create something that’s both intimate and communal at the same time. And the intimate side I don’t really need an audience there for … It’s just about me singing, intimately, from the heart. But there’s a whole other side to my music that’s like ‘We’re all in this together’ and ‘Catch my disease’ and songs like that, that are hopefully giving people a sense that they’re part of a community and feeling connected to each other. Often what I’ll do for those kind of songs, is I’ll bring a lot of friends into the studio, because essentially you’re trying to create your own festival vibe. It has to work with 20 of your friends before it will work with 20,000 people! (more…)
Symphony Fantastique: What’s what with WASO & Teddy Tahu Rhodes
When asked what the highlight of the upcoming West Australian Symphony Orchestra season is, WASO’s Executive Manager of Artistic Planning , Marshall Maguire, simply says ‘everything’. Pressed further he’ll let you know that the calibre of visiting artists working with the orchestra this year is quite spectacular, but you can’t keep Marshall Maguire’s enthusiasm for everything WASO from spilling over. Zoe Carter caught up with Maguire for a little insight into upcoming season.. (more…)
Richard Mills AO conducts AIDA
This month WA Opera presents Aida at His Majesty’s theatre. Directed by Graeme Murphy, the production features a stellar international and local cast. Conductor Richard Mills, AO, told OUTinPerth’s Zoe Carter about some of the highlights of WA Opera’s latest production…
‘Our tenor has sung the role at the Metropolitan Opera and is a regular guest artist there, his name is Eduardo Villa; our baritone …Anoosha Golershorki, he’s also sung the role at the Met. Our Aida is an outstanding young Perth based artist, Avale Cole, who is going to have a great career internationally – she already has a London agent. She’s a very fine artist indeed. This is a role debut for her, and the role suits her completely. She has the vocal ability to sing the role, which is a very rare ability, and she brings great grace and subtlety to her portrayal of her character.
[The fourth member of the quartet] is the great Australian mezzo soprano, Bernadette Cullen, who is a legendary artist at the height of her powers. (more…)
Tim Campbell: Wild one at large
One of the emerging trends in movie theatres seems to be the professional production of recordings of theatrical Productions. Starring as Johnny O’Keefe is Tim Campbell – the long time star of stage and screen otherwise known as Mr Anthony Callea. Zoe Carter caught up with Tim to find out more about his brush with the Wild One … (more…)
War & (a) Piece of Gardening
After the speculation on the perfidy of aphids in a recent column, I was feeling pretty certain that without my kindly delivery of OUTinPerth my lovely family would remain unaware of the significance of the sudden burst of appreciation for their company and the offer of culinary treats – and the strange correlation between such unprecedented behaviour and the onset of urgent major jobs in the garden. In describing the organic paradise I was creating, fuelled with free labour cunningly extracted from unwitting family members, I bargained without an appreciative reader telling Mother about said column. It turns out my mother knows how to use Google. Who knew? (more…)
Pride WA Back on Track
Pride WA appears to have successfully lived up to it’s theme for 2008 ‘Reinvention’, hosting a well supported month-long festival that appears to have avoided the financial and organisational difficulties that have plagued the organisation in recent years.
This year Pride WA Inc introduced new strategies to ensure the financial viability of the organisation and the events that it runs, including introducing an entry fee for Fairday, employing a professional event manger for Fairday, collaborating with an established GLBT venue to present the party, and running a separate women’s party. Indian Colonial Era Anti-Sodomy Law Verdict Expected?
In the Delhi High Court this month the final stages of hearings into India’s anti-sodomy laws will be held. The laws have been targeted by human rights groups and HIV/AIDS organisations for their victimisation of GLBT people and sex worker populations. The systematic discrimination supported by the laws are contributing to poorer access to treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS, fuelling the epidemic amongst these vulnerable sectors of the population. Daniela Sea
From controversial trans* character Max in the L-Word to Calvin the Iraq Vet and bomb expert recruited to the feminist revolution in Itty Bitty Titty Committee, Daniela Sea’s roles are nevertheless nowhere near as fascinating as she is. She’s travelled through India as a man, played in punk bands, performed in circus troupes and moshed with the Riot Grrls. (more…)
