New Year’s Resolution… or My Plan for Looking Better Naked!
Hello, 2009!! Whether you rang it in with a pash, a snooze or one too many cocktails, the new year is here and with it that age old tradition of the resolution.
Resolutions come in a wide variety from the financial ‘start a stock portfolio’ to the personal ‘get a partner and/or get rid of one’ to the most commonly made (and most commonly broken) resolution I like to think of as the ‘look better naked’ resolution. And like half of Perth shocked by the sight of themselves in a swimsuit as summer came all too soon (much like a bad one-night stand), I am vowing that 2009 is the year I get hotter and fitter than ever before. Ollie’s World :: Where have all the good guys gone?
Written by OIP StaffTuesday, 16 December 2008 OiP’s single guy Ollie Pincott talks about the lows of life on the scene…
On a Saturday night you’d expect a 21 year old single guy to be out drinking, dancing and laughing with friends. That’s what we do right? And that’s usually the case, but tonight I’ve found myself sat at home surfing the net, trying to find an excuse for my unsociable mood and a good reason for being home alone. After wasting a good hour or two on Facebook, I’ve come to the conclusion that singledom sucks. I can’t think of any merits for being single at all. Not one. (more…)
Literature :: Dorothy Porter (1954 - 2008)… what a piece of work she was.
‘I think my poetry is about passion and extremes. Curiosity and a verbal exhilaration fuel it. When it works, it has a theme and a charge that some readers have forgotten poetry can have.’

So said Dorothy Porter when I interviewed her back in 2000 for the Perth Writers Festival she was attending here in Perth. She was an abrupt woman. Determined. Concise. As a young writer I was intimidated by her, but so in awe of her majesty, of the language she created and commanded. (more…)
Music :: MGMT
Written by OIP StaffWednesday, 10 December 2008
The appeal of psychedelic pop gods MGMT is diverse. So much so that when they played Belvoir Amphitheatre on Saturday December 6, it wasn’t just the usual free flowing Fremantle suspects who appeared there: no, it was as though the entire Western suburbs had suddenly appeared. And with just cause too. MGMT were and are incredible to watch. (more…)
Music :: Stereosonic 2008
Last Sunday was all about the summer music festival vibe as Claremont Showgrounds became home to Stereosonic 2008.
Quality acts including Pnau, Paul Van Dyke and Sneaky Sound System rubbed shoulders with the likes of Kaz James and Midnight Juggernauts, but it was the people who played in front of the stage that provided a good amount of the entertainment. (more…)
Fashion :: Festival Wear Dos & Don’ts!!!

Global Gathering (as well as the smaller, inaugural VROOM! Festival) happened on the weekend, and with the sluice of outstanding, block rocking tunes, came a plethora of the good, the bad and the downright ugly fashion wise. Which made me think – since when did festivals become such a haven for the badly attired? I mean, the setting itself is beautiful – nay, epic, particularly with the skyline so close it’s almost breathing down on you – so why can’t some of the people be beautiful? I mean, there are some beautiful people, but there are so many, many more ambassadors for trash. (more…)
Music :: The Piano Man in Perth
I am probably not Billy Joel’s primary demographic. After all, I’m in my mid-20s, an age more suited to Global Gathering than a Billy Joel concert. And while Global Gathering had a stellar lineup (though not necessarily stellar fashion), I just could not turn down the chance to see the Piano Man last Sunday. This was the music I grew up listening to, yes, I’m going to say it – this was my parent’s music, and I can’t help but love it. (more…)
Life OUT Loud :: On Becoming a Girl and Finding the Glass Ceiling
So there I was at Sunset Coasters, sent by She for Whom We Jump to supervise Young Oliver (erstwhile Ad Man of OUTinPerth) and his camera, with a perfectly delightful group of professional gentlemen assembled in the sultry summeresque evening at the Lucky Shag. Marvellous folks really – if you’re interested check out Sunsetcoasters blogspot for details of their Christmas function. Civilised as it was, I was the token girl there. I was feeling a bit out of place, out of sorts and then, while musing on a theme that has had me fascinated for the last few weeks, I hit what was more of an Unlucky Snag. (more…)
In the News :: America - Change? Yes we can!
In her first ever blog for OUTinPerth, News and Online Editor Megan Smith reflects on her recent trip to America and the change that she believes is surely coming…
For anyone who has left home for a long period of time, you can understand the complicated feelings that come from a return. It’s that sense, not so unlike déjà vu, that everything is the same, but different, that so much has changed and nothing at all. You pass places and catch up with people full of memories, and if you are a big sentimental softie like I am, you try not to get too nostalgic about it all. (more…)
Fashion :: More clothes should come with warning labels!
More clothes should come with warning labels. No, seriously: they should. And I’m not talking about the washing instruction ‘do not put this white top with colours’ (clearly) or ‘do not iron this plastic print because, well, if you do you clearly have no concept that plastic melts under extreme heat’. No, not those kind of warning labels. (more…)
