Project X: Wear It With Pride WA influencers on board and ready to go
Western Australia’s eight storytellers are ready to add their stories to the national education campaign for the 85 law reforms pertaining to same-sex attracted people, Wear It With Pride, at a launch to be held at the State Library Theatre on June 8.
Wear It With Pride is based around a series of 85 T-shirts inspired by various human stories behind the reforms. Each of the 85 T-shirt designs will be used as part of a cross-media campaign to the help LGBT community members engage with the new laws so they get the most out of their new entitlements and responsibilities. GALS Goes To New Zealand

Arriving at dawn of the first day of April 2010 in Auckland, for the Out and Loud choir festival, was the very tired but excited GALS choir of WA. This was the third Australasian gay choral gathering with choirs from NZ, Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and an American group. Twelve members of the choir under the musical direction of Claire King made the journey for our first overseas trip. Enjoying great downtown apartment accommodation we joined three days of meetings, workshops, and rehearsals for the finale concert in the Auckland Town Hall. There was also lots of good group time together and oh, some sightseeing. (more…)
GALE force - Human Rights And Marriage Fights
It is with great disappointment that I see that the Federal Government has announced a Human Rights Act will not be introduced in Australia. There has been a good deal of debate surrounding the issue – the amount of power given to Judges, the ability of policy makers to chop and change legislation at will as well as whether to instead opt for a Bill of Rights (which would amend the Australian Constitution) and so on. However, it is difficult to deny that the introduction of an Australian Human Rights Act would have changed Australia for the better. (more…)

GLBTI Retirement Association Incorporated
GRAI, (GLBTI Retirement Association Inc), in partnership with Curtin University, has been continuing its research project Accommodation options for older Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex (GLBTI) individuals. Support for this research project is through a Lotterywest Social Research Grant.
A state-wide survey conducted late last year explored current practices and attitudes of WA retirement and residential aged care providers with regards to older GLBTI people. These findings have informed the development of Best Practice Guidelines which will provide practical strategies to the providers of retirement and residential aged care so that they are better able to recognise, understand and meet the specific needs of older GLBTI people. Project X: Post Mardi Gras Maintenance
For many a gay man the preparation for Mardi Gras involves endless weights, tanning, waxing, clipping and preening. Time, energy and money all go into making sure it is a night not to forget. The WA AIDS Council (WAAC) hopes that all your preparation paid off and that you had an amazing time.
WAAC would also like to remind you to do a little maintenance post Mardi Gras, in the form of HIV/STI screening, if you made the pilgrimage over to Sydney in March. It is important to keep in mind that a number of infections (such as HIV and Syphilis) are more common in NSW, and this can be particularly true at Mardi Gras, when people flock to Sydney from all over the world, including places with higher infection rates. Even if you practised safe sex, you could still be at risk of picking up syphilis or another sexually transmissible infection (STI) through other sexual activities like oral sex. If you did have unprotected sex, be it a slip up or a conscious risk you decided to take, WAAC would like to offer you its services. It’s better to know and do something positive about it sooner rather than later. (more…)

All I Want For Valentines Day - Is Equality…
Break out the chocolates and rose bouquets – Valentines Day is upon us. Whether you’re planning a romantic dinner, movie-night or just staying in, it’s hard to ignore the flurry of hearts, flowers and appalling poetry coming our way through magazines, billboards and TV. It’s unfortunately one of those holidays that the media jumps on eagerly –bombarding us with endless images of happy, plastic perfect couples celebrating Valentines Day. Sadly, in mainstream media that means almost entirely heterosexual couples. Not for the first time, GLBTI people get left by the wayside and forgotten amid the flurry of rose petals and heart-shaped candies. (more…)
