Cross Campus Queer Network: Which Way Is Gay?

The CCQN began in 2006 and is now in its fifth year. Ever since queer departments and young queer voices began emerging on campus there has been a growing sense of unity which has culminated in the current representation of sexuality and diversity for the queer students at our universities. The Cross Campus Queer network is a social, political, academic and representative collective of queer student working towards safety and acceptance. There is now a sense of unity between the campuses and actions toward equality like never before. (more…)

Freedom Centre Garage Sale

Freedom Centre will be holding a garage sale on Saturday 13th March 1-5pm to raise funds for a new weekend-long retreat to be held in July this year.

The retreat is an opportunity for Freedom Centre young people to have a weekend away, get active, relax and learn new skills.

Unfortunately Freedom Centre’s budget does not cover accommodation, transport and recreation costs for a retreat this big so we are fundraising to make it happen. (more…)

Project X: Sexual Adventurism Forum

We need your experience and knowledge! The WA AIDS Council (WAAC) wants to gain a better understanding and insight into gay men who enjoy group sex activities. So, WAAC is introducing a new, free forum that will run monthly, starting from March 23. This forum is specifically for the guys who are interested in ‘things less vanilla’ and who wish to discuss issues, challenges and possibilities in an open, frank and social environment. (more…)

Living Well With HIV - Ahead of time

For many of us, growing older may mean that our bodies will begin to reveal vulnerabilities and normal age related health issues may become evident. Psychologically we also start the gradual adjustment to growing older by beginning to recognise and accept that perhaps we need to drive our body less hard than we once did. For people living with HIV the natural health challenges with growing older can present themselves ahead of time. The Health Department in WA currently reports that almost 40% of gay men with HIV are between 40-49 years of age, with a further 40% over the age of 50. These ages are not very old in the traditional sense, however when over laid with the impact of living with HIV, suddenly many people are confronted with health challenges that they might not have expected until much later in life. This is the first time we have had a significant number of PLHIV who are middle aged and over and services will need to learn to adapt what they do to be able to respond well. (more…)

The Adventures Of Perth’s Serial Dater: Monsieur Who?

You know when you have those weeks that seem to drag on for eternity, and every day reveals another blinding symbolic sign that the world hates you. You discover that your crush deleted you in his latest cull on Facebook, your own mother says, ‘I saw your ex at the Gym, he’s looking great!’, your best friends are going away for the weekend without a hint of an invitation, and the stunning French boy you took to dinner in December is now dating a bronzed hotty. From The Editor

I sat at my desk thinking ‘Oh my god… how do you run a newspaper?’. Well I’m not exactly sure I know the answer to that one yet, but OUTinPerth is somehow still here, three years later.

Working with, and for, the GLBTIQ community as Editor of OUTinPerth has been a great experience and learning curve. It’s great to see some of the positive changes in the community in that time – movement towards equality, thanks to the Rudd government’s 85 reforms; the gay baby boom; some great research initiated by GRAI and WACHPR; renovations in our major venues and many people finding it easier to come out and be themselves. Community groups have had their ups and downs but most are chugging along, trying out new events and new strategies and in the process building a great community. (more…)

Living Well With HIV: Acceptance

Elisabeth Kubler Ross describes five common stages that people go through when they are experiencing the process of grief or loss; denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. One of the personal challenges for people living with HIV is to overcome the sense of loss derived from no longer being able to play out their sexuality in exactly the same way they did before they were diagnosed. An Open Letter From Pride

Dear Community,

It wouldn’t be the start of a new year if there weren’t rumours circulating about the health and future of Pride. I’d like to take this opportunity to openly discuss Pride’s current position and some of the challenges the committee has been faced with in the past few months, as Pride’s side is often left unheard in these matters. (more…)
