Swift As a Shadow…

After a decade of involvement with Gay and Lesbian Equality (WA), Rod Swift is saddling up and riding off into the sunset. Speaking exclusively to Out In Perth, Mr Swift talks about his history in GLBTI activism, why volunteering is important and a rewarding experience, and the importance of GLBTI lobbying even after achieving significant law reforms in WA and Australia. Time For Us

First of all our HUGE CONGRATULATIONS go to the winners of the GLAMMYS who were announced at the Pride MASKerade Ball. They were all worthy winners.

An even HUGER THANK YOU to the sponsors who make them all possible.
Through the year keep a note of people, organisations and places you think have delivered for the GLBTIQ community and nominate them for an award next year.

Now Pride is at the ‘business end’ of its year with our major events fast approaching. So firstly a reminder of the dates you need to keep free: (more…)

Are YOU who we’re looking for??

Feeling a bit lost lately? Think your life could do with some value-adding?

Perhaps it’s time to take Ghandi’s advice, ‘The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others’, and consider volunteering….

The Western Australian AIDS Council (WAAC) is looking for committed reliable people to join us as volunteers!

WAAC volunteers come from a wide range of communities, ages, and join volunteering for a variety of reasons. While some come to give back to the community, others are interested in developing their skills or being part of a project team to create change. (more…)

‘Gay Asian Community’, do we have one??

The Perth gay Asian community is rarely seen out there. It begs the question whether it actually exists, or even needs to exist when it comes to a presence, and any education and resources that might be needed.

Recently I had an interesting conversation with a friend about the difficulties he’d encountered in meeting an Asian ‘Mr Right’ within the Perth gay community. Things like: ‘It’s too hard to communicate with them; they don’t even understand what I am saying half the time; it’s just too much work; they are way too passive and fit those stereotypes that many of us have about Asian men; they are all too skinny’. Last year the club buzzed every Saturday at Social Play, mouth-watering afternoon teas were served up and lively social events hosted including Community Sundowners, a merry Christmas Party, Australia Day BBQ and the gayest Trophy Presentation Dinner on record. (more…)

Election 2010 – Getting gender & sexuality on the agenda

The Federal election has been called for August 21 and this year gender and sexuality equality have taken a back seat to refugees, health reforms, taxes and political slander campaigns. Last election we managed to get a huge step forward with the Labor Government passing 85 Federal Reforms that gave same-sex couples equal access to social services, health care, superannuation and other recognitions and entitlements. Back from Wollongong, QC 2010

QC is the easiest way to refer to Queer Collaborations, the youth conference for all sexualities and genders combining under the banner of queer, for participating students to address the ghosts of queer politics past, present and future.

They fight for a broader sense of equality as it involves diverse lifestyles, their young active minds becoming more aware and informed of what it takes to make a difference to those who have been neglected so long….us. (more…)

Demystifying the HIV window period

Maybe you’ve got great HIV risk reduction strategies in place – always use condoms for anal sex whether you’re the top or the bottom – but there was that night, not long ago, when both you and the guy you brought home were a bit pissy and you can’t remember if you used a condom. Or, maybe you’ve done the talk-test-test-trust strategy with the new love-of-your-life, and now the rubbers are off with the boyfriend, and on with everyone else. (more…)

GLCS – do you know a closet that needs opening?

Gay and Lesbian Community Services (GLCS) are offering our award-winning training program ‘Opening Closets’ to workers, employers and policy-makers in the not-for-profit sector. Expert trainer Sandra Norman has many strategies and tips for making your workplace more inclusive of and accessible to clients and employees of diverse sexuality, sex and gender.

The full day training session will take you through recently revised Equal Opportunity legislation, and how to develop policies and practices to cover your responsibilities. You will be challenged to think about how common myths, homophobia and transphobia, or your attitudes impact on your colleagues or clients. Come along and discuss how to promote your service as LGBTIQ friendly, and what that really means. (more…)
