Does the Lavender Belt exist any more? I heard it more recently referred to as ‘The Pink Triangle’, that section of metropolitan Perth bordered by Leederville, East Perth and Bayswater. This is the precinct once regarded as the major residential zone for gay and lesbian people, if not the only one.
When I lived in North Perth for 13 years, most of my gay friends and colleagues lived within this zone. But this was during the 1990’s and the world has changed a lot since then. (more…)

Living the Simple Life - On moving in and getting on
The first night my girlfriend and I spent in our new abode, I was so excited about decorating it. When I sat perched upon the kitchen bench with her and her best friend, it wasn’t our sparse unfurnished rooms I saw. The empty dining room with its white walls was, in my mind, the setting of lavish dinner parties and sophisticated mood lighting. The dining table and chairs that had been donated to us were mere starter furniture, to get us through. In my mind, I saw a house to rival the images on the pages of the home style magazines that I have been devouring since I can’t remember when. To Market, To Market
Buying a house is an adventure. It has a quest, hero, damsels in distress (guess who?) and villains. My fiancé and I have recently joined the masses in this pursuit to buy a house. We have discovered that sometimes, the real estate agent fits into the black cape of the villain.
When we entered the housing market with the blush of naivety, they circled around us as though we were prey. I could almost hear ‘fresh meat’! They pounded us with a smattering of questions ‘How much are you willing to pay?’ ‘Have you been looking for long?’ Innocently, we answered honestly. (more…)
