Perth Fashion Festival: Turn to the left!
There’s a buzz beginning to build. It’s tingling its way along King Street and gathering up the hustle and fun of William Street. It is starting to spill out of design studios, boutique dressing rooms and the wardrobes of Perth’s most fashionable and stylistically sound. It’s a hum – or possibly the sound of a thousand high heels gathering momentum – that is making a beeline for the 10 year anniversary of the Perth Fashion Festival which will explode across our city for over thirty events, spread over nine days, from September 4, 2008. The Slaughterblouse
Once in a while there comes a fashion experience which promises to deliver such a unique shopping adventure that it will simply rock your socks off. The Slaughterblouse is such an adventure. Not only does it have the most outrageous name, but it promises to provide a splatter of some of the most amazing labels around. This unique boutique male and female fashion store has the cold hard industrial edge of a slaughterhouse all mixed up with old world feminine charm thanks to French antiques. Throw in clothes from Rittenhouse, Burfitt, Minimarket, Odeur, Cacharel, KIND, Nathan Smith plus many more and you’ll think you’ve died and gone to heaven. A gallery space out the back tops off the lavishness of the place, with Loveariel’s feisty bloodthirsty feminist work on display for the first month. The Slaughterblouse can be found at 451 Beaufort Street, Highgate with opening hours Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 6pm. Finally – fashion to die for! (more…)
Look in Da House!
John Curtin Gallery presents a double fashion whammy this month with two amazing exhibitions cramming their way into this stunning space. The first exhibition, House of Tarvydas, pays homage to Ruth Tarvydas with a 40 year retrospective which shows how immense an input Tarvydas has had into WA fashion. The second exhibition, Looking Out, proves to be as equally as exciting. In this, five prominent WA designers will present capsule collections of their actual clothes and designs. The designers will be creating five outfits which best surmise their favourite techniques and shapes without the constraint of production. Put simply, expect completely original one-offs! Looking Out will feature ae’lkemi, Aurelio Costarella, ericaamerica, Megan Salmon and Material Boy (pictured). Both shows run until October 10 at John Curtin Gallery. (more…)
Pop on in!
With Popsicle, The William Street Collective continue their unending dedication toward delivering unique retail experiences. And this time, they take shopping up a notch. Located at the old abandoned bank opposite Grapeskin (214 William Street to be exact), Popsicle is an eleven day event from September 4 to 14 being held during the 2008 Perth Fashion Festival. It will present Perth with a wealth of underground designers, whether they be creating clothes, jewellery, accessories, home goods and more. What’s so unique about this event is that stage designers will actually reconstruct the interior of the venue to create a series of alcoves, transforming the building into a place of discovery and a wealth of retail therapy. Expect Joveeba, Dapple-Grey (pictured), Golden Child, Generics plus many more. (more…)

Another spectacular STYLEAID has come to a close and with it a new record set in the amount raised by the West Australian AIDS Council for The Freedom Centre youth initiatives and programs for people with HIV/AIDS. Fragrance Road Trip ‘08
Some of you who are regular readers of the fashion pages of OUT might remember my wonderful fragrance road trip from last year celebrating some of the new fragrances to hit our shores. Even though the air outside is still crisp it will only be a matter of weeks before we once again see much more sunshine and the return of warmer weather. (more…)
The Rebirth of STYLE(AID)

STYLEAID is the quintessential fashion fundraising event on the Perth social calendar. Now in its 11th year, STYLEAID brings together the very best – and most super stylish – West Australia has to offer for one night and one star struck night only. This not only includes the glittering socialites who call Perth home, but also the abundance of talent who help create the magic backstage, from the designers to the stylists to the models, make up artists and even the fashion students who help create one of the most magnificent nights around. Fashion is all about transformation. The very act of getting dressed changes and redirects our energy into the role our clothes conjure and create, be they a uniform, something more casual, something more outrageous or something downright glamourous. Whatever the clothes invoke, it is the fact that they invoke which makes fashion so damn exciting and addictive. (more…)
Lincoln Ferguson

One of the charms of STYLEAID is the wave of new talent it uncovers, and this year is no different. Among the short yet sharp list of emerging designer labels stands Perth born and bred fashion stylist Lincoln Ferguson and his new range of men’s intimates, known simply as LINCOLN. (more…)
M-M-M-Material Boy
As a shooting star blazes a trail across the cosmos it does two things. Firstly, it inspires those who watch it with its momentum and trajectory. Secondly, however, the shooting star in question travels further and further from its home. Such is the price of being a shooting star – the meteoric rise comes coupled with being distanced further and further from home. (more…)
