Getting Fruity with Pineapple Dance Studio

Louie Spence is the epitome of camp. He’s got the lisp, the sashay, the ability to spin on cue… plus he can backflip and put his legs behind his head.
Spence is the living, breathing, high-kicking funny bone of Pineapple Dance Studios, a hit television show being dubbed as ‘car-crash reality TV’, currently screening on Fox 8. (more…)
Oh To Have Lived In America…

While the prospect of living in America may be far from appealing in this modern age where a double dip recession looms, but back in the 1950’s the USA was truly the land of opportunity.
While the suburbs became the land of white picket fences and pinafores, baked goods and nuclear families, the cities became visceral melting pots of nationalities, immigrants moving to the world’s greatest economy to pursue the American dream. (more…)
The World According To Kransky

To say The Kransky Sisters are odd or a little bit strange is a vast understatement: these girls are just plain weird.
Together, Mourne, Eve and Dawn Kransky have an Old World charm that is at once deadpan and endearing.
They hail from the small town of Esk in Queensland where they took up residence in their mother’s brother’s house after he died at the hands of one of his own inventions: a high-sprung wind-up envelope opener. (more…)
Perth Street Art Profiles: Sean Morris

Since its inception, Last Chance Studio has developed a certain notoriety across the nation. It’s known as the home of Perth’s baddest boy band of street artists and rebel rousers, image makers on the edge of cool. Perhaps the unlikeliest addition to this ensemble is Sean Morris.
Morris is, first and foremost, an illustrator. But thanks to his residency at Last Chance his work has been taking on new forms and guises. He doesn’t see himself as a street artist, but he’s definitely producing street art. (more…)

Dance If You Dare

Contemporary dance is thriving here in Western Australia. Sam Fox knows it. His new show – Personal Political Physical Challenge (PPPC) is testament to that.
In it, Fox sets suburbia ablaze with the old sleepover childhood game, ‘Truth, Dare or Physical Challenge?’ The result is a show which blurs the line between bad romance and high drama. (more…)
Flocking To Wallpaper

For many of us, wallpaper occupies a bizarre double life in our own personal worlds.
In one instance it haunts us with memories of our childhood bedrooms, emblazoned with repeated motifs of cars or horses… or horses in cars.
In another, it’s the super cool embellishment which flocks the walls of uber chic venues, adding that much needed touch of class. Hell, even fashion’s godmother Vivienne Westwood has designed wallpaper to make your home super styling beyond belief. (more…)

Doing The Rounds
Bennett Miller is a man obsessed with dogs. Obsessed! The guy went all the way to Melbourne to create a scale replica of the United Nations… pup-ulated with Daschunds (trust me, I saw it). Now he’s appearing at PICA as part of Rounds, his entire room installation paying homage to a very special guest star on the weekend… Rolly the dog. Obsessed I tell you! Mind you, a mild sense of obsession seems to play at the heart of Rounds as an exhibition, with record players, interactive swinging structures, foosball and cabinets filled with drawings on display. All up, Neil Aldum, Rebecca Baumann, Tim Carter, Elise/Jürgen, Sgannon Lyons, Bennett Miller, Sarah Rowbottam and George Egerton-Warburton will be on show. Runs until August 25. www.pica.org.au (more…)
McQueen’s Ragtag Entourage

Lathered in heavy make-up that’s as thick as her eastern-European accent, Rosa the Russian beautician is bringing her Baltic humour for a whirlwind tour of Western Australia.
With one night in Perth and two other dates in the state, Rosa’s alter ego Marney McQueen told OUTinPerth she couldn’t resist returning to the west. (more…)
Fools by Heavenly Compulsion: King Lear

The exuberance of youth and middle age is a currency we spend far too quickly. That’s why, when our twilight years engulf us, it’s better to be frugal with circumstance and affairs.
King Lear is a cautionary tale of how the sweeping gestures of old age can come back to bite you, particularly if those gestures are ruthless in nature. (more…)
