From the President’s Pen…

Reinvention; Progression; Transformation - These are all activities which involve change, activities which Pride WA has undergone in 2008 to ensure that we have many Pride Festivals for the future.

It’s been a challenging year so far but the committee has definitely risen to the occasion and we aim to deliver a festival unscathed by difficulties of the past and representative of Pride’s bright and hopeful future.

We are confident that the majority of our community will understand the need for change to deliver on a promise made nearly 20 years ago when Pride was formed. We live in a very different society to the world of 20 years ago and making a choice to progress with time rather than challenge it, will amount to benefits for the diverse range of people in our Pride community.
This year’s theme – Reinvention – is symbolic not only of changes that Pride must undergo, but also the changes that we all go through every day as we travel through life. It’s also symbolic of changes that our fine city is going through in regards to infrastructure and population, as people from around the country and the world travel here to make it their home.

Reinvention is all around us but is particularly prominent within our community, a community which itself has been Reinvented since Pride started working towards celebrating diverse sexualities. When questioning the value or relevance of Pride it’s important to sit back and think about how far society has come in the last 20 years. Yes we do live in a more tolerant world but is there work still to be done? I don’t think we need to answer that question for you.

We have an amazing festival filled with your favourite events plus some new ones too. Pride is about bringing people together and there are many other community groups and organisations in Perth that are assisting us with that goal this year. Many of the events that you will see in this year’s festival guide are staged and paid for by our community groups, their role is invaluable in building a stronger community!

There is something for everyone in this year’s line-up and we can’t wait to get out there and enjoy Pride month. We thank everyone who has contributed over the year to bring this festival to life, most importantly our sponsors and our volunteers. We hope to see many of you throughout the festival!

Happy Pride!
