Queer Movies All Week on SBS

The Way He LooksSBS is celebrating the Mardi Gras season with a stack of queer movies on SBS 2 and SBS On Demand.

The season kicks off tonight with Brazilian film ‘The Way He Looks’.

This romantic drama from Director Daniel Ribeiro is a warm Brazilian coming-of-age movie.

Leonardo, a blind teenager searching for independence, together with his best friend Giovana. His life changes completely with the arrival of new student Gabriel, and with him, a rollercoaster of emotions. A compassionate and delicate look at disability and teen sexuality. ‘The Way He Looks’ screens on SBS 2 at 9:30pm.

On Tuesday low budget Australian film ‘Zoe.Misplaced’ will be screened. Filmed in the inner city suburb of Newtown this film follows 20-year-old Zoe, whose regimented life is turned upside down when she unexpectedly falls in love. She soon finds herself facing a series of choices whose outcomes not only impact on her independence, but on the relationships with those most important to her.

‘Zoe.Misplaced’ is the debut feature for Australian Director Mekelle Mills and goes to air at 10:15pm.

Tune in at 10:35pm on Wednesday to see a comedy from The Philippines. ‘Remington and the Curse of the Zombadings’ make fun of the many horror movies made in The Philippines local film industry.

In this over-the-top horror comedy the main character Remington is a slacker whose main interests lay with booze and girls, until he meets Hannah.

Suddenly, he is becoming neater, nicer, and more sensitive… and starts developing feelings for his best buddy, Jigs. To top it all off, he must deal with a serial killer on a rampage against gay men, and fabulous zombies roaming the streets. The film has been praised for it’s hilarity and industry bible ‘Variety’ said is was “Exuberantly Silly”.

Thursday night’s film is from Finland. ‘Open Up To Me’ It’s written and directed by Simo Halinen, whose previous feature film was ‘Cyclomania’.

Actress Leea Klemola was widely praised for her moving performance as Maarit, a beautiful Trans woman who is  estranged from her wife and daughter. Her budding relationship with a soccer coach and family man adds new complications, as Maarit faces compounding prejudice as she tries to find her way in the world. ‘Open Up to Me’ is on at 10:35pm.

Finally on Friday night there are two films to see.  British film ‘Appropriate Behaviour’ screens at 8:30pm, followed by ‘Geography Club’, a film from the USA at 10:05pm.

In the Brooklyn-based indie comedy ‘Appropriate Behaviour’, twenty-something hipster Shirin (played by Desiree Akhavan, who also wrote and directed the movie) finds it hard to reconcile being the daughter of a traditional family of Persian heritage and her identity as a young bisexual woman.

After failing to come out to her family, Shirin is dumped by her girlfriend Maxine, and endeavours to rebound with a series of sexual adventures.

‘Geography Club’ is based on Brent Hartinger’s best-selling novel about sexual identity among suburban teens.

It’s a feel-good teen movie that follows a group of students at Goodkind High School, who aren’t quite ready to come out, so they form an after-school study group to act as a front for their LGBT support group.

Among the cast look out for Nikki Blonsky who played Tracy Turnblad in ‘Hairspray’.
