Community Group Profile: The Freedom Centre

The Freedom Centre's new 'Safe Space' poster. Poster design by Nadine Toussaint.

We are a drop-in centre where same sex attracted and gender diverse young people can come and meet people in a safe social space and get peer support and information. Drop-in sessions are for people under 26 who are questioning their sexuality or gender, or who may identify as LGBTQ. We are a safe space to come and be yourself. We respect everyone. Visitors may bring a friend or family member for support while they get used to the centre.

In addition to our drop-in services, we run workshops, events and short courses for the young people that visit the Freedom Centre (FC). We also provide training and resources for professionals, and information and referrals for parents and friends of young people with diverse sexuality and/or gender. Anyone can contact us to get information, resources or referrals. With all of the programs we run and resources we provice, our aim is to support the health and diversity of young people’s sexuality and gender.

The FC is a project of the WA AIDS Council. It started out as a group of young men who wanted to stay in touch and support each other after doing a WAAC Gay Men’s Education course. We’ve evolved and are now funded by the Office for Mental Health as part of the National Suicide Prevention Strategy.

In addition, to their regular weekly programs – Create (4-8pm Fridays), Guyspace (5-8pm Tuesdays), and Girlspace (5-8pm Wednesdays) – the FC has a couple of events coming up, including our Reflections Festival in early December (reflect and have your say!) and the FC Xmas Party at Create on December 14th, 4-8pm.

And lastly, we are always looking for VOLUNTEERS!! We rely on them to exist, so if you are 18-26 and willing to help your community by committing 10 hours a month, contact us!
