Queer Screen returns with massive program of exciting LGBTIQA+ cinema

The full program for the 13th annual Queer Screen film festival has been revealed, with screenings available both on-demand and in Sydney cinemas.

The much-loved celebration of LGBTIQA+ cinema and storytelling is running from 2 – 8 September in New South Wales, with all films available in a curated on-demand season from 9 – 16 September.

The festival opens with Jim Queen, direct from rave reviews at Cannes and Sydney Film Festivals. Directed by Marco Nguyen and Nicolas Athané, this film is described as a neon-soaked, animated French/Belgian odyssey weaponising queer iconography in a hilarious, disco-fueled apocalypse where a virus threatens to turn queer people straight.

Another major highlight is closing night film Sweet Milk Lake. Written by, directed by and starring transmasculine actor Harvey Zielinski of Deadloch fame, this one-of-a- kind journey of Australian drama explores brotherhood, belonging, and trans identity in a hyper-masculine rural town.

CEO of Queer Screen, Benson Wu, says it’s an exciting, strong year for LGBTIQ+ cinema.

“From major festival hits straight out of Cannes and Sydney Film Festival to groundbreaking Australian debuts, Queer Screen is showcasing a wealth of new, creative LGBTIQ+ cinematic styles and storytelling,” Wu said.

“We want audiences to walk away with a lasting impact and a genuine excitement for what’s next.”

In total, 12 feature films and 16 shorts will be screening throughout the festival, alongside the return of the Queer Screen Pitch Off Competition and the Emerging Narrative Feature Competition.

Sydneysiders will also be able to attend the inaugural Queer Screen Studio – providing a full day of masterclasses, panel discussions and networking events.

Queer Screen Film Festival runs from 2 – 8 September in Sydney and 9 – 16 September on-demand. For the full program, head to queerscreen.org.au
