Local Sports May Roundup

SAPPHIC TRAMPERS

On May 10, the Sapphic Trampers will meet at the Pioneer Village, Armadale (corner of Albany Hwy and South Western Hwy) at 8.50am for a 9am start on the Bibbulmun. The walk will start from Sullivan’s Rock and head north through the Monadnocks Conservation Area, crossing the summit of Mt Vincent and Mt Cuthbert before reaching Monadnocks Campsite for lunch. Some sections of the walk will be challenging climbs. The total length of the walk is approximately 14km. Trampers should bring lunch, snacks, water, sturdy footwear, and wet weather gear. LOTON PARK TENNIS CLUB

With April’s showers, the challenge was on to complete the Club’s annual Club Championships. Congratulations to the winners and everyone who competed. Tennis returns to normal Social Play on Saturdays from 1pm through the winter. The Club’s Annual Dinner and Award Presentation is at the Court Hotel on the May 3. G&L BADMINTON

G&L Badminton is a mix every week of core regular players, badminton ‘virgins’ and unexpected blasts from the past. Special thanks this month to Frank for bringing his stereo (what’s a gay and lesbian event without music?!) and Cam for bringing energy in the form of biscuits. Whether newcomer or veteran, G&L Badminton looks forward to catching up with you at one of the friendliest places on the gay and lesbian circuit – Alma Venville Recreation Centre, Wednesday nights 7.30-9.30pm.

GAELIC – COASTAL BREAKERS

Following two pre-season tournaments in April, the Gaelic season kicks off (get it?) in May with games on Sunday at Tom Bateman Reserve. WAWFL

The Women’s AFL season gets into full swing this month. Last season, the league expanded and split into two divisions, and in the 2008 season, both the League and Reserve divisions will have 6 competing teams. SWIMMING – RAINBOW WARRIORS

After a busy this summer competing in various ocean swims, the Rainbow Warriors are back in the pool for their Sunday morning Sessions. The group swims every Sunday at 9am. If you’re ready for a good training session in the water (minimum of 1km swimming), call Alain on 0414 561 488 for venue details.

THE GOLF BAGS

The Golf Bags is a lesbian group that plays 9 holes of golf every Saturday morning at different Metro courses north and south of the river with the odd out-of-towner/overnighter/afternooner thrown in. Golfing talents vary quite markedly, but they operate a handicapping system to level the playing field and have prizes every week for longest drive and nearest the pin as well as a handicap winner. There is no joining fee, just a standard $18 to play. If you are a lesbian and golf is your bag, they are always looking for new members. WAGL

The WAGL social bowling league meets every Sunday at 11am at Warwick Superbowl. The cost is $20 for 3 games, of which $2.50 goes into a social fund. For more information, visit www.wagl.org.au.
