Touch Football – We just keep 'Trying'

It’s been a busy couple of months in the Touch Football calendar. Australia retained their title as reigning world champions at the 6th Touch Football World Cup in held in South Africa in January. The Kiwis were too strong for the Mixed Open Team, however the Aussie Open Women’s team recovered to crush their Kiwi rivals 9-3. Having drawn their previous contest in the competition, the Men’s Open team were then under not inconsiderable pressure to perform. They did so in style, defeating the Kiwis 8-5, and securing the Cup for Australia.

On the March long weekend, teams from touch districts throughout WA battled it out at Arena Joondalup for the State Touch Titles. While the Perth Brothers lost their stranglehold on the titles, they successfully defended the State Open Men’s championship, defeating Southern Districts 9-7. Northern Districts wrested the title from the Brothers in the Open women’s, winning 9-5, and Fremantle emerged as winners in a close struggle against the Perth Brothers mixed team.

From the 14th to the 17th March, the teams from Around Australia will be fighting it out in the 2007 National Touch League Championships in Coffs Harbour. The WA players are mostly playing in a combined WA/NT side, The Barbarians, with the ‘Barbs’ Open Women’s squad tipped as a team to watch this year.
