Approximately 30 people, most of whom were representatives of community groups and GLBTIQ media, turned out on Monday, February 23 to discuss ways of keeping the financially troubled Loton Park Tennis Club viable.
The forum focused on using Loton Park as a more versatile community venue; with club president Michelle Rigg saying the possibilities are not limited to tennis or even sport.
The Bears have been holding regular meetings in the clubhouse since mid last year and Michelle Rigg encouraged other community organisations to follow suit.
‘We’re not looking to hold everything there, but there are heaps of groups who are paying to hire venues for meetings that could move to Loton Park,’ she said.
Ms Rigg stressed the importance of working together as a community to save the club and that while it may be Loton Park that is facing difficulty at the moment, there will come a time when another group or organisation needs support.
‘If the community wants to keep this venue we need to help each other out.’
Overall, according to Ms Rigg the outcome of the forum was very positive although the financial difficulties for the club are still unresolved.
