Madrid’s Annual Lesbian Day of Visibility has prompted Spain’s only out lesbian politician to send a message to her fellow closeted MPs.

Ángeles Álvarez, a member of Spain’s ruling Socialist Party, has asked for other MPs to come out.

Standing with other Spanish women in Puerto Del Sol, Álvarez stated “I am Ángeles Álvarez, a socialist deputy of congress — and a visible lesbian.”

“It’s time to break the silence”, she said.

“It’s time to live our lives out in the open and grant ourselves the right to happiness. Only with equality and visibility can we effect change.”

Álvarez is widely known for being both a feminist and campaigner for LGBT rights.
