World Bank Halts Ugandan Loan

Uganda2The World Bank has halted a 54million pound loan to Uganda due to its strict new anti-gay laws.

The cut in funding is the biggest financial penalty handed down to the African nation since it announced it’s strict new anti-gay laws. Earlier in the week The Netherlands, Norway and Denmark cut their aid to the nation, while Sweden is reviewing their stance. The United Kingdom and Australia have confirmed that their aid is directed to individuals rather than the nation’s government.

Ugandan government spokesman Ofwono Opondo responded to the aid cuts on by posting to his Twitter account,

“The West can keep their ‘aiid’ [sic] to Uganda over homos, we shall still develop without it,” Opondo tweeted.

The spokesperson then went on to describe the the World Bank’s decision as an attempt to blackmail the Ugandan government.
