Art Shorts – May

LOL

For her first time in Australia, British comedian Zoe Lyons will venture to Perth in June as she joins the travelling troupe of the Melbourne Comedy Festival Roadshow. Critics have branded her as the ‘epitome of camp comedy’ for her razor sharp wit. She’ll be touring WA from May 25 to June 16 with shows scattered across the state. Acts range from stand-up comedy to musical and sketch comedy, with each show hosted by one of Australia’s favorite comedians. You can catch Zoe or one of the other riotous acts in Perth from June 8-13 for the 12th annual Roadshow.

DANGER DANGER WILL ROBINSON

In a larger-than-life case of mistaken identity, a 10-year-old boy named John Curtin becomes embroiled in international political intrigue. When US. President Roosevelt mistakenly calls Curtin instead of his Prime Ministerial namesake; he sets off a catastrophic chain of events. The Danger Age follows Curtin as he tries to save his hometown of Kalbarri from oncoming disaster in this comical and visually rich performance. With celebrated WA playwright Kate Mulvany and director Sally Richardson leading this production, critics have labelled the show explosive and enlightening. The show is on at the Deckchair Theatre from May 11-29 with tickets on sale now.

GETTING PRIMAL

Satisfy some primal urges this month at the Primal Playgroud exhibition opening on May 7. Local emerging artists Rose Skinner, Tiffany Moffat, Seylapaul Som, and Korrin Stoney have put together a collection of curious creations hosted by the Mixtape Gallery. The artists worked with the core ideas of animal and human behaviours with an eclectic end result. The free exhibition is on display at the Mixtape Gallery, 454 William St, Northbridge and runs from Friday May 7 until May 16.

HOP, SKIP & JUMP

Big things are to come from the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts with two new performances that are sure to be hits. Internationally-acclaimed US choreographer Deborah Hay has been working with two WA girls to interpret her solo piece, In The Dark. Renowned for experimental contemporary dance, the improvisational piece will foster strong influences from the choreographer’s unique style. SPRUNG is a new performance by Sue Peacock and Stefan Karlsson as they make yet another eccentric piece together. SPRUNG will premier on June 16 at the PICA Performance space, with the In the Dark performances at PICA from June 17.
