Many Russian fans were disappointed by the country’s early exit from the 2014 World Cup Tournament, but one Russian Orthodox Priest has written expressing his gratefulness that his country will no longer be participating in the tournament.

Father Alexander Shumsky wrote in his column on the Christian website Russian Peoples’ Line that players wearing brightly coloured shoes were promoting the “gay rainbow”.

“Wearing pink or blue shoes, [the players] might as well wear women’s panties or a bra,” wrote Shumsky.

He also cited the “unthinkable” hairstyles sported by some players as cause for offense.

“The liberal ideology of globalism clearly wants to oppose Christianity with football. I’m sure of it. Therefore I am glad that the Russian players have failed and, by the grace of God, no longer participate in this homosexual abomination.”
