Based on a novel by french writer Victor Hugo the musical was by Claude-Michel Schönberg, who composed the music and Alain Boublil who wrote the original French lyrics by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel. An English-language libretto was created by Herbert Kretzmer.

The show first opened in Paris in 1980, but really took off three years later when producer Cameron Mackintosh took the show to London’s West End.

Macintosh brought the show to Australia in the 1980’s and the show launched the careers of some Australia’s biggest musical stars.

“Twenty-five years ago I set out to find Australia’s stars of the future for my first Australian production of LES MISÉRABLES. It launched the careers of some of Australia’s biggest stars, like Marina Prior and Anthony Warlow, and I’m thrilled with this amazing cast of performers that I’m hoping will also become household names in the future.” Mackintosh said.

The new production features Simon Gleeson in the iconic role of Jean Valjean, while NIDA graduate Hayden Tee takes on the role of the antagonist Javert. While Fantine is played by Patrice Tipoki who previously had leading roles in productions of ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Wicked’.

Following it’s Perth season the show will head to Sydney.

Tickets for the show go on sale from Ticketek on July 14th.
