Unholy Resurrection: The Doug Anthony All Stars

DAAS - 123

Australian comedy legends the Doug Anthony All Stars are hitting the road again, ten years after their last hurrah. We caught up with Tim Ferguson, also known as ‘the pretty one’ to see how it’s all going.

“We’ve done Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney and Hobart so far and it all seems to be going very well. There are tears. There are always tears. There is occasional rage and there’s the usual vilification of various majorities who turn up. We’ve been offending the usual majorities. We leave minorities alone because they’re singularly tedious and precious about being mocked so we tend to go for the majority.”

Ferguson said he knew precisely who would be on the receiving end of the All Stars’ unique brand of diabolical comedic warfare when they brought the show to Perth. ‘When we come to Perth it will be everybody in the city of Perth. Including backpackers, tourists …And the insects too. We have a real beef with insects. Anybody from… What’s it called? That place where they have a cafe so they think that they’re interesting? Oh yeah! Fremantle. We won’t be putting up with anybody from Fremantle at all. Our tolerance level has lowered even further.’

Ferguson is joined by Paul McDermott as well as Paul Livingston, a.k.a. ‘Flacco’ in Richard Fidler’s stead, who Ferguson says has given the trio a whole new dynamic. “He performs a very different role. There’s no way you could make Paul Livingstone convincingly play an idiot. He’s way too smart. Richard pulls it off, easily, he had a gift for it.”

The All Stars are performing some of their classics alongside new material. “It’ll be great to be back in Perth. The Regal Theatre in Perth is where the Doug Anthony performed our final gig, way back when. So it’s got special emotional significance to us.”

The Doug Anthony All Stars are performing at the Regal Theatre on September 10th and 11th. Tickets available at ticketek.com.au
