GALS Rock the Town Hall

After a recent tour that took in New Zealand, Perth’s very own Gay And Lesbian Singers (GALS) hit home turf to present their first concert of the year, Big Love.

Set at the Perth Town Hall on Saturday June 26 and hosted by Channel Ten newsreader Narelda Jacobs, the night ‘was a tribute to love, all the trials and tribulations that go with it’, explained GALS membership coordinator Jannette Barrett.

‘It was an elegant night, and lots of fun,’ said Barrett of Big Love, which had approximately 150 people in attendance.

Every matter of the heart was covered with choir mistress Claire King leading GALS through such songs as Stop In The Name Of Love, Tragedy, a Gershwin medley swing set and an opening and encore performance of What The World Needs Now.

There were also a number of solo spot numbers, including one from newly joined Russell Lindsay, GALS’ only male choir member.

Lindsay, who made his debut at Big Love, joined GALS in October 2009 after seeing them perform at Fairday.

‘We need more balance in the choir, because I’m the only gay in the Gay and Lesbian Singers,’ the tenor told OUTinPerth.

‘I think more men should get into it.’

‘We’re wanting to recruit men,’ added Barrett.

‘We only have one man and we think he needs some company.’
