Foxtel stops running iceberg marriage ads

Fullscreen capture 4082015 22748 PMPay TV provider Foxtel has announced that it will no longer run the controvertial ‘same sex mrriage iceberg’ advertisements from the Marriage Alliance.

In a statement posted to their Facebook page the TV provider said the ads would not be included in future schedules. Foxtel said it was a strong believer in allowing people to put forward opposing views but said the company itself was a strong supporter of marriage equality.

We can confirm we have removed the Marriage Alliance ads from our future programming schedule. We understand that many people have disagreed with Foxtel’s decision to broadcast these ads. However, we believe that in a democracy people should be permitted to put opposing views. Foxtel remains a strong supporter of equality for all Australians as evidenced by our support for Australian Marriage Equality, a fact which they have publicly acknowledged.

The station faced a consumer backlash when it began airing the advertisements with many viewers cancelling their subscriptions in protest.

The Marriage Alliance is a new group that advocates for traditional marriage. The well funded group launched in Sydney a fortnight ago and has strong links to the Liberal party.

Television stations Chanel Seven and Chanel Ten turned down the advertisement, while radio network Austereo drew criticism from listeners for airing the advertisement on Perth’s MIX94.5.
