Should marriage be called garriage or larriage?

One opponent of same sex marriage in the USA has suggested a series of terms to cover same sex unions, Pat Fagan, the director of The Family Research Council‘s Marriage and Religious Research Institute, suggests it’ called ‘ garriage’.

The directors comments were captured by Right Wing Watch. Fagan made the suggestion at the launch of a new book ‘Truth Overloaded’ by author Ryan T Anderson. Anderson recently visited Australia and toured the country as a guest of the Australian Christian Lobby.

Fagan said the US Supreme Court’s ruling on marriage was akin to highway robbery before suggesting that those who do not want to recognise the unions of same sex couples refer to their unions as ‘garriage’. He also has a name for lesbian unions – ‘larriage’ and if you’re discussing just a homosexual union that would be a ‘harriage’.

“A proposal, something along this line, that we in the pro-family movement start using related terms, but keep “marriage” for what it always was. So we might call — and this is to be worked out — but something like, if you’re talking about gay marriage you call it “garriage.” If it’s lesbian, you call it “larriage.” If you want a generic homosexual marriage, it’s “harriage.” But getting these words into use I think is key. And that will take time, but whomever holds the language ultimately holds the whole game.”

Anderson said he preferred to simply call marriage between a man and a woman as ‘marriage’ and refer to other variations as an attempt to redefine marriage.
