Cartoon Network UK have edited an episode of the animated series ‘Steven Universe’ to remove romantic moments between two female characters.

The US series has been lauded for its powerful female characters and queer representation, prominently featuring same-sex relationships and genderqueer characters – a rarity in children’s programming.

The show’s creator and former producer Rebecca Sugar confirmed earlier in 2015 that female characters Ruby and Sapphire were deeply in love.

The unedited episode of ‘We Need To Talk’ shows characters Pearl and Rose Quartz engaged in an intimate dance during a musical moment of the program. The episode features a number of romantic moments between male/female characters that remain uncensored.

Cartoon Network responded to the UK’s PinkNews, addressing their decision.

“The US broadcast system requires that shows are marked with a rating – in this case PG (parental guidance necessary). In the UK we have to ensure everything on air is suitable for kids of any age at any time.”

“Be assured that as a channel and network we celebrate diversity – evident across many of our shows and characters.”

“We do feel that the slightly edited version is more comfortable for local kids and their parents.”

Same-sex marriage has been legal in the United Kingdom since 2014.
