Troye Sivan wins GLAAD award

TroyePerth musician and YouTube star Troye Sivan has been honoured at the 27th Annual GLAAD Media Awards.

The awards, which were held in Los Angeles, recognise media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and the issues that affect their lives.

Sivan was named outstanding musical artists for his album ‘Blue Neighbourhood’.

The singer, who famously came out to his fans in a YouTube video in 2013, address many LGBTIQ related issues on his debut album.

Singer Demi Lovato was the recipient of the Vanguard award, it was presented to her by the actor and singer Nick Jonas.

Taylor Swift presented Ruby Rose (both pictured with Sivan) with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award. The award, named after the late Hollywood casting director, recognises people who have worked to reduce homophobia and AIDS-phobia.

The best reality TV show category was a tie, with both ‘I Am Cait’ and ‘I Am Jazz’ sharing the award. The first series follower high profile celebrity Caitlyn Jenner as she negotiated her gender transition. The second series followed Florida teenager Jazz Jennings who transitioned gender when she was five years old.

HBO’s 2015 film ‘Bessie’ was also highlighted, along with the TV series ‘Sense8’. Queen Latifah has a starring role in the TV movie about the life of blues singer Bessie Smith, while ‘Sense8’ is a sci-fi TV series from transgender directors Lana and Lily Wachowski.

The feature film ‘Carol’ starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara was named most outstanding film, and the TV series ‘Transparent’ was also awarded.
