Liberal senator Zed Seselja has said it won’t be conservatives in the government blocking the plebiscite on marriage equality.

Appearing on SKY News the newly promoted senator said if people are worried about the plebiscite not moving forward they should look to Labor and The Greens.

“Obviously its subject to passage through the parliament, so really the question now is going to be a question for the Labor party, The Greens and for other parties in the senate in particular” Senator Seselja siad.

Senator Seselja said conservative members of the government who oppose same sex marriage would not block or delay the plebiscite.

“Why would we?” Senator Seselja responded, “We’ve got a policy, a policy to put it to the people. The people who are opposed to that policy of putting it to the people are the Labor party and The Greens.”

During the election campaign Opposition leader Bill Shorten declined to say if the Labor party would oppose the plebiscite legislation. Mr Shorten told reporters he would need to see the proposed legislation before making any comment on it.

Senator Seselja was promoted to the front bench earlier this week as the new Assistant Minister for Social Services and Multicultural Affairs.

The Senator for the ACT has previously outlined his opposition to marriage equality and has declared that he will abstain from voting on marriage if the plebiscite indicated public support for change.
