Equal Love: When The Gays Go Marching Go In

Following the success of 2010’s National Year of Action for Marriage Equality, Equal Love is calling on Perth residents to keep up the regular demonstrations.

On Saturday March 19 Equal Love supporters will be rallying in Perth, Sydney and Brisbane to show their support on gay marriage.

Perth participants will start at Forrest Place Mall in the city centre at 1pm.

Greens federal Senator Rachel Siewert and state MLC Lynn MacLaren will be speaking before the crowd marches through the Perth CBD.

Equal Love Melbourne organiser Ali Hogg said equality would not be handed to LGBT people on a platter.

‘Equal Love is pretty enthusiastic about the first set of rallies in 2011. We’ve seen in the states that have had rallies so far this year that there is still momentum in the campaign and isn’t an issue that is going to go away any time soon,’ Hogg said.

‘We encourage everybody to continue the fight because whilst it is an issue that is still being hotly debated in the media, we know that the majority of Australians support marriage equality and we need that sentiment reflected on the streets.

‘Equality will not be handed to us on a platter & I think if there is anything to learn from the past is that if you don’t fight you lose!

‘I think we shouldn’t see the 2010 year of action as over- I think we should see the 2010 year of action as a springboard for an ongoing campaign that is determined to win.’

Hogg was also named the people’s choice for this year’s Same Same 25 Most Influential List for her tireless campaigning for same-sex marriage.

The Equal Love rally kicks off from 1pm at Forrest Place, Perth CBD on Saturday March 19.
