Creators of the current iteration of Wonder Woman comic books have identified that the iconic character does not have a preferred gender when it comes to romance.
DC Comics writer Greg Rucka told Comicosity during an interview that the Amazon warrior, also known as Princess Diana of Themyscira, has been in relationships with men and women in the past.
“…an Amazon doesn’t look at another Amazon and say, “You’re gay.” They don’t. The concept doesn’t exist,” Rucka explained, referencing the female-only society from which Wonder Woman hails.
“Now, are we saying Diana has been in love and had relationships with other women? As Nicola and I approach it, the answer is obviously yes.”
Wonder Woman now joins the ever growing ranks of LGBTIQ+ characters on comic book pages, such as bisexual trans* superheroine Coagula, Marvel’s Iceman, gay couple Hulkling and Wiccan and many more.
The lasso-wielding warrior is also due to appear on the big screen later this year, starring Gal Gadot in the titular role.
