Support for marriage equality continues to grow in the USA

Two years after the US Supreme Court handed down its landmark decision on marriage equality support for same -sex unions has continued to grow.

A study from the Pew Research Centre has found that many groups who previously opposed marriage equality were now supportive.

A majority of blacks and baby boomers now support allowing gays and lesbians to wed. The report also showed that Republicans voters are now split almost evenly on the issue. Back in 2013 a similar survey found 61 percent were opposed to gay marriage.

Across the country there are now 547,000 same-sex married couples, and at least 157,000 of those couples married in the past two years.

Across the whole population 62% of Americans now support marriage equality. Support is strongest amongst younger people with 70% of people aged between 18 and 36, being in favour.

One of the lowest areas of support was among white evangelical Protestants with only 35% of people supporting same-sex unions, Roman Catholics by contrast were largely in favour with 67% voicing support.

Support for marriage equality in Australia is significantly higher than in the USA with polls consistently showing support in the high 60’s. Surveys have also shown that support in Australia is spread across all the vast majority of electorates.
