Perth Street Art: Sach

The shadow and cloak of street art is such that it offers great anonymity, particularly if you play the game. That anonymity can then either become full fledged celebrity or, in the instance of somebody like Banksy, notoriety (to say he is a celebrity isn’t really accurate… I mean, could you spot him in a crowd at a red carpet opening?).

One emerging street artist who is sure to garner some notoriety is Sach. Her work is at times a little confronting. It’s strong and overt, from the school of stencilling, and isn’t afraid to pack a punch. After all, who wouldn’t be shocked, initially, to find an image of two women indulging in a little S&M roleplay in a public space.

Yes, that’s right, Sach isn’t afraid to bring her sexuality to the street. Which is a breath of fresh air really: there are far too few queer street artists here in Perth, and in an age where we being denied full equality over one final thing like marriage, it’d seem the streets are the perfect place to get the message across. Still, what Sach does is confront, which is a perfectly legitimate part of the process. After all, demystifying taboos is one of the greatest aims of art in the modern age.

What name do you work under?

Sach. Nothing fancy.

Describe your aesthetic and style?

A mix of formal etching training remixed with stencil. I’m a fan of contours and solid colour. Mostly portraiture and ‘trash art’.

How does your work represent and convey themes around feminineness and sexuality?

Demystifying the boundaries and taboos of sexuality and art. Porn, Promiscuity, Pop Art?

What’s the most outrageous image you’ve ever posted as street art?

A girl with a strap-on.

Where should people go to check out your work?

You can see some of it down at Blackbird restaurant in inner city Perth or you can jump online and visit miscarriagesach.tumblr.com
