Whether you’re a lover of Brahms or discovering the 19th century German composers’ works for the first time, there’s a great opportunity to hear his work in September.
The artistic and critical triumphs which have characterised the performances in the Perth Symphonic Chorus’ 2017 Choral Series to date are set to continue in the third concert of the series, Brahm’s German Requiem.
Brahms was at the peak of his powers when he composed this towering work which is considered to be one of the finest marriages between music and text ever written.
From the opening chorus Blessed are They, through the much loved How Lovely are Thy Dwelling’, to the finale Blessed are the Dead, this exquisite work combines extraordinary rich choral tone with full orchestration and lyrical solos.
While Brahms’ German Requiem never fails to leave the listener profoundly moved. The composers longest choral work features seven distinct movements and is considered one of his greatest works.
Perth-born soprano Sara Macliver requires no introduction to Perth audiences. She is one of the most popular and versatile singers in Australia today, as evidenced by her acclaimed performance in Concert 1 of the 2017 Choral Series in May.
Appearing on stage with Sara will be Christopher Richardson, regarded as possibly Australia’s most promising emerging bass-baritone. Christopher makes a welcome return to Perth Symphonic Chorus following his performance in Handel’s Messiah last year.
Also featured in this concert will be internationally-renowned organist David Drury. The organ is pivotal to this concert, taking the place of the woodwind and brass sections of the orchestra.
A musician of David’s calibre enables the Perth Symphonic Chorus to present an ideal balance between music and choir so this unsurpassed masterpiece can be heard as Brahms intended.
Since its inception in 1997, the Perth Symphonic Chorus has impressed and mesmerised audiences throughout Australia and overseas, including New York, Salzburg and Vienna.
Led by internationally-acclaimed conductor Dr Margaret Pride OAM, the chorus comprises close to 100 disciplined, enthusiastic and passionate individuals who are skilled in performing the works of some of the best choral composers throughout the ages.
