Tim Minchin shares his thoughts on the postal survey via song

Comedian Tim Minchin has shared his thoughts on the Turnbull government’s decision to hold a national postal survey on marriage equality.

The award winning composer uploaded a video to his YouTube channel where he performs Peter a Allen’s classic, albeit with a few lyrical modifications.

Minchin rallies against the plan to hold a postal survey on the issue, but says if it is going to go ahead, “Lets drown the mofos in ‘Yes’ votes.”

A heartfelt song to my homeland, recorded last night on my iPhone. With love.
[With apologies to that fabulous, much-missed genius, Peter Allen. And thanks to Jeremy Ervine .]

Minchin was raised here in Perth and has gone on to forge an international career with his comical musical compositions.

He’s developed a career as an actor appearing in feature films like Two Fists, One Heart and the TV series Californiacation, as well as theatre roles in Jesus Christ Superstar and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead.

In recent years he’s found success creating his musicals, his adaptation of Matilda has been a hit around the globe and he’s current enjoying success with the musical version of Groundhog Day.

Earlier this week Bill Murray, the star of the original Groundhog Day film made headlines when he went and saw the musical for the first time. Sticking with the theme of a man who keeps reliving the same day over and over, Murray also went and saw the show for a second time the following night.

It’s also a reference Senator Nick Xenophon drew upon earlier this week when to describe the government’s persistence and wanting to hold a national vote on marriage equality.
