Australia Post has declared his holds no position on the issue of marriage equality.

The government owned business was forced to make the declaration after concern was raised about an internal email that offered staff the opportunity to take part in Brisbane’s annual Pride March.

The Australian has reported that staff who are part of a LGBTI network within Australia Post received an email on Thursday asking if they’d like to take part in the event and “walk proudly down the streets in support of our LGBTI+ community”.

While the email made no mention of the current postal survey on marriage, a spokesperson for Australia Post clarified that the email had nothing to do with the current political debate.

“We are proud of our diverse workforce … Our PostPride network of LGBTI+ employees and supporters have attended the Brisbane Pride March in previous years and are expected to do so again,” the spokeswoman said. “Any employee who attends will do so on their own time.”

“As a Government Business Enterprise Australia Post has no position on the Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey. Our role in the Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey is to deliver the mail, a job we do each and every day.”

Brisbane Pride will celebrate its 27th year with a March through the cit’s streets from 10:00am this morning, the community’s annual Fairday begins at 10:30am.
