Olympic stadium has denied media reports claiming that rainbow flags will be banned at today’s National Rugby League grand final.

While media reports had claimed that a ban on ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ marriage campaign signs, and rainbow flags would be in place, the venue has put out a statement denying such a ban exists.

Olympic Stadium said the conditions of entry for today’s match are the same as any other major event they host, saying that small banners and flags would certainly be allowed.

“No other large flags or banners that could prevent people from watching the game will be permitted into the seating bowl.

“Based on the standard conditions of entry for all major events, patrons wearing or otherwise displaying inappropriate or offensive images or logos may be denied entry into the Stadium or asked to remove such items prior to entering the venue.

“Fans are encouraged to bring colour and energy to the event and are allowed to express their views.” the statement said.

The NRL Grand Final has become the focus of the campaign for marriage equality in Australia in recent days after former Prime Minister Tony Abbott threw his support behind a campaign to stop rapper Macklemore from performing his hit tune Same Love during the pre-game entertainment.

Discussion of Macklemore’s appearance has dominated political discussion for the last four days.
