Thursdays set to Pop

Get ready for cocktail-serving drag queens and pop music from Cher to Christina on the new weekly event, POP, heading to Connections Nightclub for Thursday nights.

On September 1, Drag hostess BarbieQ Coals will be launching the new event dedicated to the sweeter side of music. Coals said the night would be ‘super cheesy, and super bright and colourful’.

‘We’re going back to old styles of pop. We’ll be doing Roxette, we’ll be doing Aqua, Steps, and Lady Gaga, and Madonna and Cher – every generation of it that people will remember.’

Drag queens Swish Eveready, Double Dmerits and Ruby Jewels will be behind the bar serving new cocktails while DJ Feminem, DJ Timbee and DJ Scout will be on the decks, open for requests.

Every fortnight, the drag shows will highlight a remarkable popstar with the launch kicking off with none other than Katy Perry. What differs POP from other nights will be its focus on original pop music with minimal mash-ups on the playlist.

‘We’re not doing remixes, we might do some really, really light radio mixes for the later times but generally… the music is going to be exactly how the song was originally released.’

Coals said she wanted something that was different from everywhere else and felt there was too little to do on a Thursday night for Perth.

‘Thursday nights used to be one of the biggest nights when I first came out so why can’t we do that again,’ Coals said.
Coals said it offered LGBTI people in Perth another night to get out and would help generate more business for the community.

POP launches at Connections Nightclub on Thursday September 1 from 9pm until late. Entry is free before 10pm; $5 after 10pm and free for Pride members.
