Barefoot Brides

There would be no bouquet to throw at the wedding ceremony of Hockeyroos goalkeeper Toni Cronk and her partner Lana Snook last month. Since the couple expected many of their guests to be travelling long-distances, they decided to make the wedding carbon-neutral.

So instead the couple planted 1000 seedlings to keep in the theme. The seedlings were just the start however; invitations were sent online, the menu was entirely vegetarian and organic and the dress code was ‘hippie-chic’.

Toni said it was important to them to offset since she worked in the sustainability industry. ‘[Its] really important to have our families there but we wanted to have it carbon neutral,’ Lana said. While the debate for gay marriage continues, Toni and Lana settled for their own ceremony – even the invitations were titled Toni and Lana’s Unlawful Wedding.

‘It didn’t matter what the law said to us,’ Lana said.

Toni said: ‘We wanted to stand in front of our friends and family and declare our love for each other.’

‘I grew up wanting to get married… like every other little girl.’

Toni said the Hockeyroos had been very supportive, giving her time off to hold the ceremony in the Swan Valley. The Hockeyroo goalkeeper said she was currently in training for the Olympic qualifiers and the CHOGM Super Series in October.
