Based on the debut novel by Naomi Alderman Disobedience follows the story of Ronit (Weisz), who was expelled from her Orthodox Jewish community for her attraction to Esti (McAdams).

Now after the death of her father, Ronit returns home to London where she finds Esti married to her cousin and her father’s successor as leader of the local community.

The pair quickly rekindle their relationship and find themselves exploring the boundaries of their religion, and their community, as they struggle to keep their love a secret.
