Slightly Vulgar

Pride is nearly upon which means with it comes the long awaited return of Voix de la Ville. And they’re coming back in the biggest, baddest, most outrageous fashion possible with the highly anticipated night The Prize Vulgarian.

‘It’s a massive return for us,’ explained artist provocateur Ash Baroque on the line from his chalet in The Swiss Alps.

‘As a collective we’ve done a series of different projects and now we’re realigned and ready to give it our all and kick the cabaret scene in Perth in the teeth… y’know, show them a little bit of a rawer side to entertainment.’

As Baroque explained, The Prize Vulgarian is everything underground, everything that has unusual abstract qualities. It’s also an attempt to reveal, to show everything that occurs backstage, onstage. In a sense, it’s an attempt to undo some of the mystique while remaining mysterious.

‘We’ve got poet and performance artist Dosh Luckwell who will be doing a piece that is a commentary on social networking. There’s also Strykermeyer, who has been a large part of Voix de la Ville. And then there’s Lucy Peach who will be doing a cabaret number, Ms Peach being a local cabaret come burlesque performer.’
Also appearing at The Bakery on the night will be the likes of Ginger LaMinge, Glamour Puss, Amber Fresh, Val Nourished, Iskra Valentine, Alethea Leisure, Stee Cameron-Juss Andrews and Kodi Pendant plus others.
‘The Prize Vulgarian is also a reference to Clara Bow who was a tom-boyish performer. Bee stung lips, no bosoms, looked like she was 12 years old… a very androgynous look.

‘Back then, anyone caught in make up and quite theatrical looks that were flamboyant or tarty were considered a little grotesque and a little vulgar. It was always considered a little lower class to be on the stage, but on the other hand it was a revolutionary period.’

Of course, you can expect a mini-revolution to occur when this lot tear apart The Bakery come Pride.

The Prize Vulgarian, proudly presented by Voix de la Ville, will appear at The Bakery on Sunday October 16. Tickets are available now through www.nowbaking.com.au.
