Whittaker is the first woman to play the show’s central character The Doctor in it’s 55-year history. Yesterday The Woman Who Fell to Earth, the first episode of the new series, of the show aired around the world.

Australian fans could log on to see the show online on iview just hours after it aired on the UK. It was broadcast on television at 6pm yesterday evening.

In the UK the episode scored massive ratings with 8.2 million views tuning in, accounting for about 40% of the overall television audience. Combined with online viewing figures and catch-up numbers it will give the series one of its highest ever rating episodes.

The show has had a major revamp under the guidance of showrunner Chris Chibnall. Algonside a completely new cast, there’s also a new composer, settings and distinctively different cinematography.

In the lead up to the debut of the new season the advertising for the show featured footage of Whittaker’s character breaking a glass ceiling and utilised the tagline ‘It’s about time’ – cleverly highlighting that the show is about time travel and after thirteen men had played the role, it was time for a female actor to be cast in the part.
