Prior to the controversial final season of the hit fantasy series based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, HBO had announced a prequel series starring Naomi Watts would explore the history of Westeros was among five potential projects in the works.

Today, HBO announced this prequel would be axed, and soon after announced a different story would be told in its place.

A new series titled House of the Dragon will dive into the history of House Targaryen, long before the blazing rise and fall of Danaerys Targaryen in Westeros.

House of the Dragon will take fans back to 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, with an original story created by George R. R. Martin and writer Ryan Condal.

No cast or story details have been announced yet, except that House of the Dragon will come to HBO’s new streaming service, HBO Max.
