Dolly Parton’s new TV series Heartstrings has arrived on Netflix. The anthology series is based on some of the singer’s most iconic songs.

Each of the eight episode is introduced by Parton and the series is full of camp over the top performances. Queer audiences will want to check out the second episode Two Doors Down which stars Andy Mientus from Smash! 

Mientus plays a young man who is returning home for his sister’s wedding, he’s not out to his family, and his camp boyfriend is his sister’s wedding planner. Actor Michael J Willett – who played Lionel in The United States of Tara – plays the part of his boyfriend. Daytime soap queen Melissa Leo plays his mother.

In the other episodes many well known actors appear including Gerald McRaney, Milton Roberts, Julianne Hough, Delta Burke, Ginnifer Goodwin and Kathleen Turner.

The episode Sugar Hill reunites Patricia Wettig and Timothy Busfield who starred together on the TV series Thirtysomething. 

Dolly Parton appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers and shared her excitement about the project.

“I’ve always liked to write story songs and I’ve always thoughts I’d love to sing my songs up on screen, and now Netflix fell for it.” Parton said.

The singer also launched into a chorus of her hit Jolene, but adapted for her gay fans by singing “Drag Queen” instead of “Jolene”.

At 73 Parton is as busy as ever. She’s just released a podcast series that is getting rave reviews, and she’s teamed up with dance band Galantis for a dance track.

The singer has teased she might make a dance album for several years now, and in recent interviews she’s indicated the project is still on the cards saying she has a growing number of uplifting songs that would suit a dance record.

Heartstrings is now available on Netflix.
