WA surrogacy laws languish in Parliament as attention shifts to voluntary euthanasia

The WA Parliament began talking about reforming the state’s surrogacy laws earlier this year, but after Liberal MP Nick Gorian delivered a massive filibuster speech that dragged on for weeks, the bill was sent for review and put on the backburner.

The ABC have reported on a Perth same-sex couple James and Leon who have given up their hopes of surrogacy and insead turned to adoption to make their family.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Attorney General revealed their revamped religious discrimination bill earlier this week, which includes even more provisions for people to be exempt from other discrimination laws if they can claim their statements and actions were based on a religious belief.
