Amy Meredith Goes Pop

Australian pop punk rock outfit Amy Meredith have hit the scene with the resounding screams of a thousand teens. They’re all set to be the next big thing with their sexy crooning, particularly with the release of their debut album Restless. And with tracks like Lying and Pornstar already under their belt, it’s clear to see what all the fuss is about. Drummer Kosta Theodosis spoke to OUTinPerth about naked skydiving and falling in love with babysitters.

Tell us about Amy Meredith? Basically it’s not a girl, its five guys, and we’re just a fun band. We’re all good friends and a lot of the guys in the band grew up together or went to school together so we’re basically just a group of friends.

Describe your sound? It’s pop. It’s a rock band but we’re playing pop music with a bit of a new wave feel. So it’s kinda new wave pop rock.

Where does the name come from? Amy Meredith is the name of the lead singer, Christian’s babysitter when he was five years old. He had a crush on his babysitter. Basically he decided to name the band after her.

What can fans expect from the debut album, Restless? The album is a culmination of the whole time the band’s been together. So the first song on the album is actually the first song the band wrote. So if anyone’s heard the singles Pornstar and Lying it’s along those lines. It’s upbeat and good fun songs. You can dance to them. It’s a fun album.

Tell us about skydiving in your underwear? Basically with the Hot 30 we told them that if we got to number 1 or a number 1 top song in the Hot 30 we’d go naked skydiving. And some how – none of us expected it to happen – we got to number 1, and the closest we could get to doing it was skydiving in our undies. It was fun. They set it up for us and we were all scared but it ended up being an amazing experience. We all had a lot of fun.

Would you do it again? Definitely. I vowed never to do it in my lifetime but after doing it once it was so much fun I’d definitely do it again.

And you’d do it again in your underwear? Probably! That was what made it so good.

Who are your idols? There are so many different ones because everyone is coming from a different background. I used to listen to a lot of jazz because I studied jazz at uni for a few years. But I guess the collective influences? We all love bands like The Cure, Depeche Mode and The Killers.

Would you rather play on the moon or under the sea?
I’d love to play under the sea. I don’t know how I’d play the drums. I think it’d be really interesting to do it, see all the animals and hopefully not get eaten by a shark.

If you were The Spice Girls, which Spice Girl would you be?
I’m Posh Spice.

If Amy Meredith were an ice cream flavour what flavour would you be?
Bubblegum.
