An Horse

‘Right now I’m at my friend’s house drinking beer, so I feel like that is kind of a way to become normal…’ said An Horse’s Kate Cooper, calling from Montreal, Canada.

An Horse’s guitarist and singer, Kate Cooper, and her band mate Daman Cox have just spent nine weeks touring the U.S. and Europe with their grainy indie-rock. An Horse hails from sunny Brisbane, has supported Tegan & Sara and Death Cab for Cutie and will be playing at next year’s Southbound Festival in Bunbury. The openly lesbian singer went on to explain how she balanced out her rising rock-star status with reality.

‘[You have] to socialise with your friends and slip in like you haven’t disappeared… and pretend that you were here this whole time,’ she said.

‘They think I’m super quiet for nine weeks and then I’m really loud and annoying, you know, six weeks here and then I disappear into this quiet, introspective person.’

In April this year, the duo released their second album, Walls. While some critics argued that the album was all too similar to their first, it’s fairer to say that the album shared the winning earmarks of its predecessor. It’s got that fast acoustic, rock-indie sound that’s a bit rough around the edges. Both of the band’s albums share that distinctly short and fast acoustic rock that Canadian duo Tegan & Sara have worked so well.

‘We’ve supported them a bunch of times,’ Cooper said of Tegan & Sara.

‘The first tour we ever did was in North America with them and then we supported them in Canada and in Europe and in Australia.

‘Sara and Tegan are both awesome and they’re both some of my best friends, I see them a lot and I don’t even know what to say about them.’

As for Southbound, Cooper was looking forward to the festival but dispelled some common myths about music festivals.
‘It’s pretty cool. We’re pretty blessed, I guess. That sounds like I believe in some kind of god but I don’t, the god of Rock’n’Roll perhaps.’

‘You know, it’s really funny at festivals people think there’s a lot of time to hang around and see bands but often the case is that, I don’t see anything…’

‘That being said, at the Perth festival I actually have some time and it’s the day before my birthday so I plan to see some stuff.’

Don’t miss An Horse when they play at Southbound Festival on January 7 & 8, 2012.
